Protect Yourself from Medicare Scams This Open Enrollment Season

Medicare Open Enrollment happens every year from October 15 to December 7, and it’s an important time to review your health coverage and prescription drug options. Unfortunately, it’s also a time when scammers step up their efforts to trick people into giving away money or personal information.

The good news? With a little awareness, you can protect yourself and your benefits.

How Scammers Try to Fool You

One of the most common scams involves fake calls, emails, or texts from people pretending to be from Medicare. They may sound convincing and even know some of your personal details. Typically, they’ll say you need a “new” or “updated” Medicare card and then ask for your Medicare number, bank account, or credit card information.

Don’t fall for it — real Medicare cards are free and mailed automatically. Medicare will never contact you unexpectedly to ask for your personal or financial information.

Smart Ways to Stay Safe

Here are a few simple steps you can take to protect yourself this season — and all year long:

  • Ignore surprise calls, texts, or emails. If someone demands your Medicare or financial information, it’s a scam. Medicare will never try to sell you anything or charge you for a card.
  • Don’t trust caller ID. Scammers can make it look like Medicare is calling, even when it isn’t. If you’re unsure, hang up and call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) directly.
  • Use trusted resources. If you need help comparing costs, coverage, and plans, contact your local State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) or visit Medicare.gov, the official U.S. government site for Medicare.
  • Report suspicious activity. If you think someone is impersonating Medicare, call 1-800-MEDICARE and also report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
